San Dimas is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County, CA. The city is blessed with mountain views such as the San Gabriel Mountain to the north. It lies to the east of downtown Los Angeles, which is accessible via I-10 W.

San Dimas covers a total area of 40 km² and the city’s population as of 2019 was 33,621.

A brief history of San Dimas, CA

San Dimas’s roots go back to the 19th century, when a group of American explorers led by Jedediah Strong Smith set up camp at a Cienaga (marsh land) in 1826. The area would later be known as Mud Springs after the nearby Mud Springs marsh, and it was even called Mound City for a short time. A monument on E. Arrow Highway marks their campsite’s exact location.

Spanish Dons Señor Ignacio Palomares and Señor Ricardo Vejar stepped foot in the area in 1837 and set up a range for vast herds of cattle. Legend has it that rebellious outlaws often made raids on the cattle here – some say they were Native Americans. Whenever this happened, Señor Palomares would curse his bad luck and angrily invoke the name of St. Dismas, the thief who was crucified with Jesus. This may have come from a village called San Dismas in Sonora, Mexico, where Señor Palomares had lived. It is from there that the area came to be known as San Dismas Canyon.

The city was first mapped in 1887 when a station for the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad, later bought by Santa Fe Railroad, was built. Following that, the San Jose Ranch company laid out its first streets and small businesses started to operate not long after. Its economy boomed during this time, and it was also then that the city took on the name of San Dimas.

Agriculture was a core industry here, and San Dimas was known for orange and lemon groves. There even used to be four citrus packing houses and a marmalade factory here. Interestingly, the Sunkist name originated here, which was first spelled “Sunkissed”.

Among the best elementary schools are Arma J. Shull Elementary School and Oak Mesa Elementary School. Middle schoolers can attend Ramona Middle School and Lone Hill Middle School.

The majority of San Dimas students attend high school in San Dimas High School, which is located on the same city block as Lone Hill Middle School. Alternatively, those living in the Via Verde neighborhood along San Dimas Ave. can go to South Hills High School in the Covina-Valley Unified School District. There are also some students who attend school in Charter Oak Unified School District, which is home to Life Pacific University, which offers programs such as business administration and mass communication.


San Dimas can easily be accessed from Interstates 10, 210, and 57. If you are traveling by train, you can get a ride via an Amtrak train from Pomona station or via a Metrolink train in its Pomona and Covina stations.

Getting around by bus is straightforward with several bus stops and commuter parking lots in Via Verde and downtown San Dimas. Foothill Transit is the most popular bus service provider.

You can also travel via private vehicle through services such as Dial-a-Cab and Get-About.

For commercial flights, the Ontario International Airport, near the city center, can be accessed via I-10.
